What is Fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by constant
presence of widespread pain in muscles and joints of the body. Other symptoms
may include chronic aching of all of the body, stiff muscles, tiredness, sleep
problems, depression, and digestive problems. (Only 50% of Fibro patients suffer
with depression). It is prevalent in the United States (not so in other countries) -
mostly in females between 25-50 years of age. An estimated 5 million people
suffer from Fibromyalgia in the U.S. Fibromyalgia is generated by the Central
Nervous System (CNS) which causes the pain. It is the body’s way to address
unresolved pain. It is a chronic pain disorder due to unknown cause, a physical
break-down of a breaking down body or an over-stressed system. Fibromyalgia is
NOT an inflammatory disease, a psychiatric or psychosomatic disorder, or a
dysfunction caused by depression. Muscle fiber inflammation is not normally
present.
What are the causes? Causes for this dysfunction are unknown, but there are
several factors which may contribute to the onset of Fibromyalgia:
- Stress: physical and/or emotional...One of the major factors in 90% of
people suffering with Fibromyalgia.
- Unresolved prolonged muscle pain.
- Muscle or joint trauma (such as car accidents) left unresolved.
- Neurological conditions and/or problems in the autoimmune system.
- Abnormal sleep patterns.
- Too much exercise.
- Compulsive and precise personalities are common with Fibromyalgia.
What can you do about it? Current standard treatments include:
- Medication: Antidepressants are prescribed to help with the body’s
serotonin production. Other meds are given to help deal with sleep
disorders, digestive problems, and pain.
- Exercise: Believed to be of great benefit, and non-aggressive aerobic
exercise seems to offer the most aid. Yoga, Tai Chi, water aerobics, and
simple movements help as well. High impact aerobic exercise is not
recommended as it may be another contributing factor in the cause.
- Relaxation techniques are very important in relief of symptoms. ‘Counted
Breathing’ and ‘Peaceful Visualization’ techniques work quite well.
- Diet is vital, especially avoiding ‘allergic’ foods. A good anti-oxidant as well
as food supplements may be recommended.
- Massage is often prescribed for treatment of Fibromyalgia. The main goal
of massage is to relax the client.
- Acupuncture, Acupressure, Chiropractic adjustment, Physical Therapy, and
Lidocaine Injections may also be prescribed as treatments.
Jupiter Farms Massage has instituted a painless massage to relieve the pain
and help eliminate the symptoms of Fibromyalgia by teaching the body how
to heal on its’ own. This 30-minute treatment is suggested 2 times weekly for
5 weeks to be most effective in re-educating the body back into balance. With
the first treatments you begin to sleep better and find relief from digestive
problems. As treatments continue, personal activity increases as your body allows
until you are back to your 'normal' self without the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
How does our massage work? We use specific massage strokes producing
corresponding effects in the systems and organs of the body. This touch, or
mechanical stimulation, is sent to the Central Nervous System (CNS) which
initiates change. The CNS then sends out signals which produce physiological
changes in the tissues, systems, and organs. The massage stimulates and initiates
the energy of nervous stimulation which begins a chain of nervous-reflex reactions
in the body. Both conditioned and unconditioned reflexes re-educate the body into
proper function. Positive touch results in reduction of pain, normalization of blood
pressure, improvement of the immune system’s function, and generation of the
healing response. We deal with pain, swelling, muscle contraction and reflex
builders with pressure touch.
Our intention for this treatment is to re-educate the Central Nervous System,
Circulatory System, and Immune System (suprarenal gland). The Central Nervous
System should relax, with emotional and physical stress decreasing. The function
of the Autonomic Nervous System normalizes or restores itself with increased
adrenalin production due to improved suprarenal function. The increase of arterial
flow and the increased production and delivery of serotonin improves circulation.
As you can imagine, this treatment also benefits symptoms of other dysfunctions
such as MS, Depression, Rheumatory Arthritis, Lupis, and Chronic Fatigue. It is
beneficial for acute automobile accidents if treatment begins shortly after
accident and continues for 2 weeks. Cancer patients must recognize that this
treatment may intensify their chemo treatments, so it is recommended to wait 2
days after last treatment. This treatment does not metastasize due to
increased circulation.
This treatment should be avoided if you have any of the following conditions:
Cellulitis, blood infections, a temperature of 101 degrees or higher, any infections
– on skin or internally including kidney infection or any other infection.
Other recommendations for relief of Fibromyalgia are:
- Soak in salt water (and we have the Atlantic in our back-yard…take
advantage!)
- Exercise – walk or sit by salt water. The negative ions released from the
salt atmosphere helps to destress the body.
- Light up your Salt Rock Lamps as often as possible (available here @
Jupiter Farms Massage)
- A foot bath with Epson Salt also helps with the detoxification process.
We have found too many people complaining of dysfunctions sounding like symptoms
of Fibromyalgia. With this in mind, we are providing information and relief.
We recommend our 5-week program for Fibromyalgia. Consisting of two 30-
minute massage sessions per week for 5 weeks, this series has been adapted
from Russian Medical Massage. Bringing your body back into balance by calming
the central nervous system (CNS), clients find improved sleep and better
digestion with relief of Fibromyalgia symtoms, relief from depression and
headaches as well as a reduction in cellulite. $55 per session or prepay 10
Sessions, $500.
