            What is cupping therapy?
Cupping is a traditional time honored treatment remaining favored by people
worldwide, because it’s safe, comfortable, and remarkably effective for many
health disorders. It’s the use of suction, rather than compression for bodywork
ranging from myofascia release to lymphatic drainage and everything in between!
Cupping rapidly facilitates rigid soft tissue release, loosens and lifts connective tissue, breaks up and
drains stagnation while increasing blood and lymph flow to skin and muscles in ways not possible using
compression.

How does it work?
When applied to the skin, suction is created which draws an increase in blood and qi (vital energy) to an
area of injury or imbalance. Cupping draws toxins and disease out of the body and helps maintain good
health.

Who can benefit from cupping?
Cupping causes tissues to release toxins, stimulate the lymphatic, skin, and circulatory system, clear
colon blockages, reduce stretch marks, cellulite and improve varicose veins. On the deeper therapeutic
level, cupping is beneficial for many conditions including but not limited to asthma, colds and influenza,
arthritis, sciatica, rheumatism, menopausal discomforts, infertility, chronic gastric pain, fibromyalgia,
high blood pressure, anxiety, fatigue, and headaches.

What does cupping feel like?
When the cups move, negative pressure massage feels really great. The pulling action engages the
parasympathetic nervous system, thus allowing a deep relaxation to move throughout the entire body. It
is not unusual to fall asleep during the treatment. People are often surprised how relaxed, warm and light
they feel… hours sometimes days afterward.

What can I expect as far as physical effects following an initial cupping session?
Cupping pulls toxins and waste to the surface so that it is much more accessible to be flushed out.
Therefore, initially people often experience physical feelings of detox in the beginning. It is very
important to drink EXTRA water before and after cupping, and especially avoid alcohol, caffeine, and
processed foods. This will make the detoxification process much more comfortable.

What's the explanation of the marks or discolorations that sometimes occur as a
result from suction cup therapy?
One of the common and unfortunate misconceptions concerning cupping is the misinterpretation of the
discoloration. “Bruising” is caused by impact trauma with breakage of capillaries and reactionary rush of
fluids to the damaged area from the tissue compression/injury. There is no compression in properly
employed suction cup therapy. Although it is quite common during Stationary Cupping (left static for 5 -
20 minutes) to achieve dramatic 'marks' or 'discolourations', the less aggressive action of moving the
cups, minimizes the intensity and duration of the discolorations.

Often, when a condition exists within deeper structures where sufficient pathologic factors and
stagnant fluids (toxins, blood and lymph) are dredged up during treatment, discoloration will appear on
the skin. This is the therapeutically desired effect – the more this is visible, the greater the level of
stagnation and toxicity. The discoloration will fade over a few days. As treatments cumulate and the
release of stagnation and buildup has been dispersed and drained – (usually by the 3rd or 4th treatment)
no discoloration is likely to occur at all- even though each time the cupping may have been focused on the
same area for the same duration and with the same amount of negative pressure.
This is clearly the
result of having internal unwanted toxins systematically purged.

Who should not have cupping therapy?
Cupping is contraindicated in cases of severe diseases ie cardiac failure, renal failure, severe edema, as
well as hemmorhagic diseases such as allergic pupura, hemophilia, and leukemia, and clients with
dermatosis, destruction of skin, or allergic dermatitis. Cupping should not be applied on the portion
where hernia exists or has occurred in the past. Cupping should not be done while someone is actively
undergoing any cancer therapy, as the cupping will flush out the medication faster than it can be
absorbed.
